IOT promotes AI chip development
The popularization of 3G and 4G promotes the vigorous development of mobile internet, while Sigfox, LoRa and NB-IoT technologies solve the needs of large-scale deployment of the Internet of Things for low-power, remote connection, etc. However, with the rise of 5G communication technology, it is bound to open a new era. 5G is not just the speed of the Internet, but the possibility of interconnection. We are standing at the crossroads of a new stage in history.
5G combines artificial intelligence technology to enable all devices to interconnect and activate all kinds of intelligence. So far, the scientific and technological circles have agreed that the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence will also become the bright spot of information technology. All kinds of interconnection and the integration of cloud and artificial intelligence will promote social change and enter an intelligent society with perception of all things.
In this era, senior Internet of Things expert Yang Jianyong pointed out that high-performance chips have become the commanding heights of the times, so Sun Zhengyi is a huge gamble, such as the $23.6 billion acquisition of mobile chip hegemony ARM, and became the AI chip leader Yingweida's fourth largest shareholder, this is Sun Zhengyi after investing in Ma Yun, once again gamble heavily. And hopes to become a chip leader. At the same time, technology giants are pushing into the chip sector, with Google, Apple, Alibaba and Huawei investing heavily in AI chips and AlphaGo, the AI system that swept the Go world, backed by the TPU, Google's in-depth learning chip.
Winning AI will win the future, and chip as the commanding heights of the AI era, in the AI chip race, gathered Intel, Invidia, Qualcomm, ARM and Google, Apple, Huawei and Alibaba and other core players. As a result of many heavyweight players, the world around the artificial intelligence chip brings more uncertainty, but in the view of the Internet of Things senior expert Yang Jianyong, the current chip competition pattern, still dominated by semiconductor manufacturers.
So who will dominate Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm's three semiconductor chip giants?
(1) Intel
Intel, Invid and Qualcomm will also generate billions of dollars in revenue from IoT and AI chips. At a data-centric Innovation Summit at Intel in August, a set of data revealed that more than $1 billion in revenue came from customers using Intel's most powerful processors to run artificial intelligence in data centers.
Baidu and Intel have been working closely with each other on data centers, cloud computing applications, CPU-based AI machine/in-depth learning framework optimization, and automated driving. Alibaba builds a data-centric computing architecture based on Intel technology that captures real-time user insight from the cloud to the edge. Intel as Huawei strategic partners, the two giants from the cloud to the end, promote key technology innovation, work together to build a smart world.
Intel benefited from a sustained explosion of data growth. By June, Intel's data-centric business grew by 25% and cloud computing revenue soared by 43% in the first half of the year.
Intel's second-quarter revenue was $16.962 billion, data center revenue was $5.5 billion, up 27%, and net profit was as high as 78% to $5.06 billion. Intel's interim chief executive said recently that the supply of chips was sufficient to support the full-year revenue outlook for this year and that revenue was expected to reach $69.5 billion in fiscal year 2018. The global data center will be built mainly on Intel chips, and the Internet of Things (IOT) business will grow at a high speed, boosting its performance in a healthy and orderly manner.
At present, we are in a new era of changing the world with data. At the same time, the scale of cloud services is expanding indefinitely, 5G is coming, artificial intelligence and analysis technology are developing rapidly. All these will produce a large number of unused valuable data. Intel's data-centric development strategy is highly in line with the current rapid development trend of digital economy.
(two) Qualcomm
As the core business of Qualcomm, smartphone is now the era of Internet of Things. Qualcomm has brought artificial intelligence to trillions of Internet terminals. In order to compete for market dominance, Qualcomm has planned to buy Enzhipu Semiconductor Corp. in order to consolidate its position in the Internet of Things market and seize the next outlet. It ended in failure.
However, early on in the direction of the Internet of Things chip, such as Qualcomm MDM9206, fully support eMTC, NB-IoT and other models. At the same time, Qualcomm has built a robust and open ecosystem from infrastructure, chips, modules and equipment to reduce the difficulty of designing innovative Internet of Things solutions and achieving commercial landing for enterprises of different sizes, helping them seize the great opportunities of the Internet of Things and achieve success.
More than 30 production-ready reference design platforms, including voice-controlled home control centers, smart speakers, networked cameras and smart watches, have been provided by ODM vendors to drive sales of high-pass Internet of Things chips, which will be the second largest market for Qualcomm after smartphones. At present, shipments of Qualcomm IOT chips are growing at a rate of 1 million pieces per day. This data comes from Qualcomm marketing director Ignacio Contreras.
In the past few years, Qualcomm's business in the Internet of Things has grown rapidly and achieved double-digit growth. It is expected that Qualcomm's revenue in this area will exceed $1 billion this fiscal year. Earlier Forbes reported that Qualcomm had embarked on a differentiated path in the Internet of Things market and that revenue from the Internet of Things was expected to double this fiscal year.
(three) NVIDIA
Nvidia is directly benefiting from AI technology. In-depth learning-based AI technology has been widely used in various industries. Nvida ushered in the best period in its history and its market value has soared. Now it is the second largest chip company in the world after Intel. The income came to 1 billion dollars.
Constructing data centers with Invid GPU has become the preferred chip for many giants to train AI systems, driving the rapid growth of data center revenue. Revenue from data centers rose 71% to $701 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2009, to $760 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, an 83% increase over the same period last year, bringing Nvidia's overall quarterly revenue to $3.12 billion, up 40% over the same period last year.
NVIDIA HGX-2, the unified computing platform for AI and high-performance computing, is used by major cloud service providers around the world. Google Cloud uses the Tesla P4 GPU for AI reasoning and graphics. Shape virtualization is optimized.
